Objective: An opportunity for restaurants in Monroe County to be recognized for offering healthy menu options for kids

Guidelines:

  • Low fat milk/fat free milk will be offered as a drink option for all kids’ meals

  • Fruit and/or vegetables will be offered as a side dish for all kids’ meals

  • 25% of kids’ entrees OR at least 3 kids’ entrees must be considered “healthy”

“Healthy” Definition:

  • Grilled, baked or broiled meats/fish/poultry

  • Entrees that contain vegetables (e.g., soups, stir fries, salads)

  • Low fat yogurt, milk

Process of Designating Healthy Hero Restaurant:

  • Interested restaurants will submit their kids’ menus to the Greater Rochester Health Foundation for consideration to be part of the Healthy Hero Restaurant Program

  • Once accepted, restaurants will receive promotional “Healthy Hero” items

Examples of Tactics for “Healthy Hero” designated restaurants

  • “Healthy Hero” posters, kids stickers, placemats and crayons, and buttons for servers

  • Servers to encourage the promotion of “Healthy Hero” options by:

    • Informing customers of “Healthy Hero” entrees, low fat milk and fruit & vegetable offerings for kids’ menus

    • Wearing “Healthy Hero” buttons

    • Passing out “Healthy Hero” stickers to kids after they have ordered (praise those that chose healthy / encourage those that did not make a healthy choice to choose healthy the next time – It’s cool to make healthy choices!)
